this was a gorgeous summer day in ithaca. we had carol's famous birthday dinner which was grilled octopus - none for me, thanks - and salad and panna cotta with raspberry sauce and biscotti. it was pretty good.

batman got much worse yesterday and this morning we took him to the vet. she thinks that he has an issue with vertabrae at the bottom of the neck/top of the back, disc trouble, or possibly a tumor. she took xrays which of course reveal limited information. they can also do an imaging test which would almost certainly show the problem. if it's a disc, she recommends surgery and says that their success rate is 95% in substantially relieving or eliminating the problem. if it's a tumor, she does not recommend surgery because the outcome tends to be not good. if you don't intend to choose the surgery, she does not recommend the imaging because it's expensive. irrespective of cost, i won't have the surgery for batman. he's 11 years old for one thing. would keeping him alive be for me or for him? i think the value of life for batty is to feel good and live his regular life. since he cannot tell me his choice, i'm guessing he wants to feel good. it sure does hurt to make this decision. for right now, he's going to be at the vet for a couple of days to see if he improves with pain medicine and prednisone. on monday, i guess we'll bring him home or have him put to sleep. i'll let you know how he seems tomorrow. this evening he didn't look much better. it's not very nice there with other dogs whining and barking. i'm sorry to have to tell you this as i know you will feel sad to know that batty is in this pickle.

a couple of bandit raccoons just ate the cat food that i forgot to bring indoors.
